Continuing Professional Development "Creative Teaching in Music" - From Classroom To Classroom

The Creative Music Teaching Workshop will guide participants from initial inspiration into real classroom, exploring how creativity can be applied in music education.

 

Course Content:

1. Bringing Creativity into Your Own Practice

  • Personalize teaching to suit student needs and backgrounds.
  • Reflect and evolve your teaching methods.
  • Design playful tools and exercises to support technique and engagement.

 

2. Music-Making is Fun and Sustainable

  • Ensure music is joyful, inclusive, and accessible.
  • Support emotional expression and well-being through music.
  • Balance different musical activities to suit varied learning styles.
  • Foster student ownership and intrinsic motivation.

 

3. Group Class Facilitation

  • Create a safe and open environment for creativity.
  • Promote peer interaction and collaboration.
  • Maintain flexible yet purposeful class structure.
  • Celebrate diversity in musical abilities and backgrounds.

 

 

Target Participants:

  • Current kindergarten, primary, and secondary school teachers, and music education professionals (priority group) OR
  • University or college students interested in pursuing a career in music education AND
  • Aged 18 and above

Creative Training in Theory (Day 1)

  • To receive a Certificate of Participation recognized by both the organizer and ABRSM, attendance on both workshop days is required.

Speakers

Ms Monique Pong is a passionate music educator and arts advocate based in Hong Kong. She holds a Master of Music Education from the Royal College of Music, London, and is currently studying Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London. A graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, she also trained in Paris under Germaine Mounier.

Monique founded the Music Children Foundation in 2013, offering free music education to underprivileged children. She launched the Music Cradle Program in 2015, focusing on early childhood music. Her work spans education, teacher training, and curating innovative concerts integrating music, multimedia, and visual arts.

Ms Wong Wai Ching, Zerlina, has been a faculty member at The Education University of Hong Kong since 2000, specializing in the training of music educators across early childhood, primary, and secondary levels. She is the founder of the university’s Handbell Ensemble and currently serves as Music Director of “Teacher. Bells,” leading performances both locally and internationally. She has conducted workshops and delivered presentations at prominent music education conferences worldwide, including in Italy and Japan.

Zerlina is deeply committed to advancing music education through concerts, professional development workshops, and teacher training initiatives. Her recent work focuses on the development of music resources tailored for young children and students with special educational needs. She currently holds the position of President-Elect of the Hong Kong Orff Music Association and serves on the school boards of two kindergartens.

Mr Michael O’Donnell is the ABRSM Regional Development Executive for Hong Kong and Macau and an ABRSM Examiner. A classically trained flautist, he studied at the Royal College of Music, graduating with first-class honours and performance awards. He has performed with major UK orchestras and given solo recitals across Europe and Asia.

Since moving to Hong Kong in 2003, he served as principal flute with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Macau Orchestra. Michael is active in music education, teaching, adjudicating, and leading workshops across Asia. He previously taught at Kellett School and regularly presents ABRSM seminars and teacher training sessions.

Ms Melody Chan received early training abroad in both the Suzuki Piano Method and the Dalcroze Eurhythmics approach. She now integrates these two pedagogies into her music education practice, aiming to unlock students’ potential and deepen their engagement. Committed to promoting lifelong music learning, she works with learners across all age groups—from young children to older adults—using music as a means to develop skills, express emotions, strengthen family connections, and enhance physical and emotional well-being. She holds a Master’s degree in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University, is a registered Suzuki Piano Teacher with the SAA, and has earned multiple international certifications. Currently, she serves as a course consultant for the Music Children Foundation, lectures at the University of Hong Kong and Po Leung Kuk College of Professional Education, and is the founder of “Move Your Mind for Life,” an initiative dedicated to senior music education. She strongly believes: Music knows no age, and learning has no limits.
